I’m detained at Jena Detention Center in Louisiana. Most of the drawings you can see here show things I've dreamed about ever since I was a little girl - I have always had those dreams. And being here in Jena somehow made me want to paint them.
One day I was really bored because here I would fall into depressions. I felt overwhelmed, I felt alone, and there was always that fear, that dread that I’m going to be sent back to my country. With all of that, one day I sat down with some crayons. [Migrant Support Collective] sent me a sketchbook and some colored pencils. So that’s where I started. I dreamed this, and that’s how each drawing you can see there suddenly came to my mind.
For example, the one of the bridge with the train. I used to dream, I always dreamed. I don’t know why, I always dreamed of that train with that bridge it went into, and that I was in a big city. And I thought, well, that it was here, in the United States.
I also always dreamed of a beach with palm trees, and that I was there on the beach. And that drawing came to my mind. I’ve also never been to, I don’t know what the place is called, a place where there’s a kind of rock that’s sort of orange. I imagined that landscape, but I also always saw it in ads and on TV, and that’s how I got inspired.
And also, since I really like those candies called M&M’s, I just felt like drawing them, I don’t know why. But most of those drawings were dreams I had, and sometimes I would look at them and that was my inspiration to relieve my stress and stop thinking about things like wanting to hurt myself.
