Hello my name is Luis Fernando Mendez. I’m from Costa Rica. In 2016, I ran away from a problem that my uncle got me into. A person hurt me physically and took away the money that I earned while working hard to help my mom and grandma. My dad never helped me; instead he called me a bastard. The person that hurt me insulted me for my sexual preferences. To hide my homosexuality, I always had relationships with women; for this reason I consider myself bisexual.

My journey to make it to the USA border was really hard. I migrated to Panama for 3 years to save money until 2016. In 2019, I returned to Costa Rica. Thinking that the problem had finished, I went to another province, but they always found me. In the year 2023, instead of getting better, the problem got worse, to the point of trying to kill me. I was running away from the violence and attacks for being part of the LGBTQ community. I traveled through Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico. In 2023, I made it to the US border and I applied to the CBP ONE application to ask for asylum. I waited 6 months. Finally, I was admitted to enter the United States of America where I was eligible for a Humanitarian Parole.

I was living in different states in the US before making it to Louisiana. I met a woman who I had a toxic relationship with, where I experienced a lot of domestic violence from her part. They detained her, but her sons obligated me to pay the fee and take all charges. After a few months, she argued with me because I would not give her more money so that she could drink because it was bad for her. She called the police and invented charges against me for domestic violence. I was in jail fighting my case, even though she withdrew the charges and testified that it was all lies.

Anyways I was detained for 7 months in Parish Prison where I was assaulted and raped. When my sentence finished, they informed me that I had a detention order even though the judge dismissed my charges and they arrested me again. I was moved to Central Louisiana ICE processing center where I didn’t receive the right health attention for my sexual assault situation.

An immigration judge denied my asylum but at federal immigration court my lawyer introduced the Habeas Corpus. The judge ordered immediate release but ICE appealed the decision, and that’s why I haven’t been released. I am a very friendly, respectful, humble, and careful person. I like drawing and reading books in Spanish. I hope I can get justice and get released. I pray to my lovely God. Thank you for the support and for listening to me.
