I came here when I was seven. I lived in Juarez. It was not that different. I saw a lot of the same gangs, drugs. What I didn’t expect is to be called names or told I didn’t belong in this country. I guess I got the short end of the stick. Life worked out for my family. I’ve been arrested 50 times, sent to prison twice, the last time for 15 years.
2019 I walked away from the gang life. I found Christ. I can only wish I could go back in time, but I can’t. I just turned 50. My life flew by so fast. What I plan on doing now is live for Christ in prison. God used me to lead others to Christ. My past became my testament. Now I know I have a purpose: to help those lost in the life I lived. I want to be a pastor now that I sit here.
ICE has brought another battle. Sometimes I feel it is too hard for me. I don’t want to be separated from my kids and parents. I’ve been clean for 11 years. My mind is at peace. But ICE sees my past, not what I could do in the future. I don’t have any family in Mexico, I would be alone. Just me and Jesus. It would be easier to fall back, use drugs, or drink. How else can I stand the pain?
But the more I think of it, I will stand by my word. I will follow Jesus where he goes. No matter what I face, I will not be alone. I have seen God’s work in my life. If He can get me past whatever comes, trust in the Lord, and lean not on your own understanding. It took 11 years for me to see how short and beautiful life is. I don’t want to waste any more time. ICE says you’re a criminal, but Jesus says you’re forgiven. And if He can do it for me, He can do it for you. Be patient, stay put, seek God, and you will find Him or He will find you.
